1. Nestled on the hill at Lungnak Valley, Phugtal Monastery is constructed around a natural cave.

 

 

2. It is also called Phuktal or Phukthar Monastery which means the cave of leisure or liberation. Phuk means cave, Thal means at leisure and Thar means liberation according to Zangskari dialect of the Tibetic languages.

 

 

3. The monastery is home to a temple, a library with sacred texts, a kitchen, teaching facilities, prayer rooms, living quarters, sacred spring and monks.

4. Several years ago, when the monastery wasn’t built - this cave was the spiritual abode for the sages and Buddhist monks.

7. During 1826-1827, Alexander Csoma de Kőrös, a Hungarian philologist stayed here and authored the first English-Tibetan dictionary. In his memory, this place now houses a stone tablet.
