On this 14th May we will celebrate Mother’s Day. The day is dedicated to our mothers, to celebrate the fact of having them in our lives, their relentless and invaluable contribution to make our lives beautiful.

Our mothers are our strength, yet, despite all that they incessantly do for us, they never want anything in return. Whether the mother is a successful professional or a housewife, she will put everything on the back burner, if she feels her child needs her. All that matters to a mother is the happiness and good health of her children.

On that note, here is a tribute to all the mothers who despite having made a splash in their respective careers, pride the fact that the most important role they play in their lives is of a mother. She is the first woman to have been appointed to the coveted post and as a result of all her accolades and achievements, she has been listed as the 25th most powerful women in the world by Forbes. But this towering personality is a doting mother too. She addresses her responsibilities, both professional and personal, with equal elan.

2. Europe - Angela Merkel

The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Dorothea Merkel, is known all over the world for her political prowess. In her vast political career, she has served as the President of the European Council as well as presided over the G8 summit in the year 2007. But Merkel is an unconventional mother - she does not have a child of her own but has adopted thousands of homeless Syrians who escaped the war-torn Syria. She is the ‘compassionate mother’ who stood up for these ravaged and tormented Syrian refugees who were denied shelter by everyone else.

In addition to that she had made it distinctly clear to the office that if they really wanted her on board, they had to relax rules as she was a mother and had no baby-sitter to manage the children.

Ngozi Okonjo Iweala

One of the most eminent faces in the African political scene, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has served as the Finance Minister of Nigeria twice. This strong and feisty mother of four, wears innumerable feathers on her cap. Having earned her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she had also served as the Managing Director of World Bank.
