Theemithi (Fire-Walking)

Want to witness the fire-walking religious festival? Then plan a trip to Singapore, where the devotees on fulfilment of their wish, firewalk over the burning wood, thereby filling the air with the aroma of daring spirit and bravery. It is also believed that the barefooted fire-walkers may get burnt if they have an impure soul. The Goddess worshipped here is Draupadi, the heroine of the Mahabharata, who was put at stake in the game of dice by her husband. According to the legends, in order to prove her innocence, she walked over the hot coals barefooted and which led to this famous ritual of fire-walking, Theemithi. During this event, you will see a large number of enthusiastic men, who have been fasting or having an only vegetarian diet, walking barefoot across a 4m pit of white-hot coals. After completing this hot-foot walk, they dip their legs in goat’s milk and apply turmeric to their feet.
