    Rath Yatra - 25th June, 2017

    Rath-Yatra

Ratha Yatra aka Chariot Festival is celebrated on a grand scale in the city of Puri, Odisha. One of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, the beautiful Jagannath temple is home to three wooden idols of Lord Jagannath (Lord Krishna), Balabhadra and Subhadra. During the Rath Yatra, these idols are taken out in a procession to Gundicha Temple. After nine days, the deities are returned back on chariots to the Jagannath temple. You will see devotees pulling huge, decorated wooden chariots carrying the idols of Gods. Dressed as a sweeper, the Gajapati King cleans the road before the chariots with a gold-handled broom and sprinkles sandalwood water. It conveys the message that everyone is equal in the eyes of God - be it a King or a common man. You can also try the delicious sweet called Khaja - made of fried dough and dipped in sugar syrup which can be bought near the Jagannath Temple.
