If there’s one phrase people often toss at Japan, it’s that whole “blend of tradition & modernity” thing. A bit of a cliché, but hey, sometimes the shoe fits. Japan has a serious history—tea ceremonies, old wooden towns, and more which are crammed right next to neon lights, robots, and vending machines that might sell you everything.. Indians who want to soak all that in? You need to plan ahead. There’s no way you’ll crack the code of Japan’s wild variety in just a week or two. Still, a couple of places are absolutely unmissable if you’re travelling from India (or, honestly, anywhere). Let’s hit the highlights:
Tokyo - Tokyo is the kind of place that’ll fry your brain in the best way possible. The city’s buzzing 24/7 while packed with fashion disasters and tiny bars squeezed under train tracks. Shibuya crossing with its sea of people is utter chaos of course a good one, the kind you brag about later. Seafood? Absolutely—Tsukiji offers more sushi than you thought existed. Or visit Asakusa Sensoji for some genuine spirituality. No two days here ever play out the same—promise.
Kyoto - If you want to see real-life geishas, not filtered versions from Netflix, Kyoto’s your destination. Formerly the capital, now it’s a living museum—shrines, Zen gardens, and more cherry blossoms than your Instagram can handle. Step into the Golden Pavilion and try not to gasp (spoiler: you will). Kyoto’s temples are truly special—the kind that makes you question why you ever thought Tokyo was “calm”.
Hiroshima - This one hits you right in the gut. Hiroshima is that resilient survivor that rebuilt itself from tragedy. Sure it’s calm now but there’s a heaviness too. Visit the Peace Memorial Museum while honestly, bring some tissues and maybe skip the selfie stick this time. You’ll come away understanding a whole new meaning of resilience.
Yakushima - If your idea of heaven is breathing air older than your ancestors, head to Yakushima. This wild island is full of ancient cedar forests—think “Princess Mononoke” but real and wetter. Hike up to see Jomon Sugi, a tree that’s said to be at least 2000 years old—UNESCO had no choice but to list it. It’s untamed, lush, stunningly beautiful and completely unlike anywhere else in Japan. Basically, the untouched Japan that Instagram dreams of showing you.
Okinawa - Okinawa is a group of islands along the East China Sea and forms part of the Greater Japan mainland. It is Japan’s only subtropical region and offers a very different experience than the places described above. It has one of the best beaches in Japan and is home to manta rays, whale sharks, and coral reefs. One can come here and experience the adventure of scuba diving and snorkelling.
