1. Paro Taktsang Monastery
Paro Taktsang Monastery aka the Tiger's Nest is situated on a cliff in the upper Paro valley. This striking Buddhist sacred site is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava who meditated in the caves of this valley. If you happen to visit this place in March or April - you can experience the annual religious festival of Tsechu, celebrated in the honour of Guru Padmasambhava who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan.
2. Kyichu Lhakhang Temple
This prominent Buddhist temple is located in the Paro District. It is believed that, on his visit to this place - Guru Padmasambhava hid many spiritual treasures here. According to the locals, there are 2 orange trees in the courtyard of this temple complex which bear fruits throughout the year.
3. Haa Valley
The Haa Valley is a must-visit for nature lovers. Enjoy the scenic drive to this valley while you catch a glimpse of the splendid views of the dramatic landscapes. This place is well-known for fascinating legends and folk culture. The guardian deity of this valley is Ap Chundu. In his honour, the shamanistic ritual is still practised by the local communities.
4. Rinpung Dzong Monastery
Remember having seen this monastery before? Filming of the 1993 popular movie ‘Little Buddha’ took place here. This monastery-cum-fortress is listed in Bhutan's tentative list for UNESCO inclusion. The Rinpung Dzong Monastery is home to 14 shrines and chapels which include the Sandalwood Stupa, Protector's shrine, Temple of the Guru's Eight Manifestations, the Clear Crystal Shrine, Chapel of the Eleven-faced Avalokiteśvara, Temple of the Treasure Revealer etc.
5. The Memorial Stupa
Popularly known as - the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan, the Memorial Stupa is located in Thimphu. With golden spires and bells, this beautiful stupa attracts travellers from across the globe. It was erected in the honour of the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in 1974. Devotees circumambulate the Chorten (Buddhist shrine) in a clock-wise direction while reciting prayers and whirling the large prayer wheels.
