Sharjah has been coined as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO.

There are many museums and archaeological sites built around the city in an effort to preserve history and educate people about the rich heritage and culture that Sharjah holds. Here are a few places to visit to learn and discover more about this marvelous city.

1. Heart of Sharjah

Step back in time at the Heart of Sharjah. The region's largest historical preservation and restoration project and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A destination created to bring out the feel of the past. You will find traditional souks selling spices, perfumes, handicrafts, and textiles; museums containing traditional artifacts and art in the form of plays, calligraphy, architecture, etc.

2. Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn)

Home to the ruling Al Qasimi family and the seat of Sharjah's government, the Sharjah Fort was first renovated and opened as a museum in 1997. Learn about life in Sharjah 200 years ago as well as modern history. There are royal artifacts and pictures on displays.

Built-in 1932, the first airport in UAE now converted into a Museum, Al Mahatta Museum highlights the history of flight in the region and presents various exhibits related to aircraft. There is also a flight simulator for those who wish to experience what flying an aircraft feels like.

5. Bait Al Naboodah

Bait Al Naboodah offers you the possibility to study the actual architectural designs of conventional Emirati homes, as well as the lifestyle and values of their ancestors. This house is a completely unique model of the mesmerizing architecture of Sharjah. Constructed in the mid-19th century, the museum has been renovated to expose the existence and times of Obaid Al Naboodah and to discover how the structure of Bait Al Naboodah was influenced by the pearl trade.

6. Sharjah Heritage Museum

The perfect place to get acquainted with the history and culture of this Emirati region is the Sharjah Heritage Museum. A part of the Heart of Sharjah project, this museum exhibits the diverse environment, traditions, and trades that have shaped Sharjah over the years. Mannequins dressed in traditional attire, photographs, jewellery and handicrafts displayed around help you understand the authentic heritage of Sharjah better.
