About Manali
You’d be pressed to find a holiday destination that is quite as scenic and diverse as Manali. A tiny emerald gem tucked away in the snowy folds of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is located near the mouth of the Beas River, which ensures perfect weather nearly all-year round.
Manali’s most famous attraction is the Rohtang Pass, which is an adventure sport hotspot. Located at an altitude of 13,050 feet, the pass offers glorious views of the surrounding icy peaks and the small but beautiful Dassaur Lake. Getting to Rohtang Pass involves an exciting drive of hairpin bends and steep climbs, and can be quite a thrill in itself. Not too far away is the interesting, igloo-shaped temple called Beas Kund, which marks the origin of the Beas River. Mythology buffs will be interested in visiting the Hadimba temple, which is dedicated to Hadimba Devi from the Indian epic – Mahabharata. That the temple is located in a grove of cedar trees only adds to its allure. You can also get your picture taken with a yak or a rabbit, depending on how adventurous you’re feeling!
- More
Descend 6.5 km downstream and you can treat yourself to a good soak at a public or private tub at the Kalanath Hot Springs. Natural sulphur springs can also be found in Vashist, where you can also treat yourself to the luxury of modern bathhouses with Turkish-style showers. Once you’re sufficiently recharged and rejuvenated, you can embark on a long hike to Jogini Falls or visit Solang Valley or ‘Snow Point’ which features a 300 m ski lift. Snow Point also offers several opportunities for participating in adventure sports such as paragliding and snorkelling, as you inhale Malani’s energizing oxygenated air. No visit to Manali can be considered complete without a viewing of the Tibetan-Buddhist gompas, where you can also shop for hand-woven carpets.
Of course, Manali is not for the adventurous and experience-seeking alone. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway, head to Naggar where you can learn about the local art at the gallery or unwind with a moonlight dinner on the balcony of Hotel Castle, under a canopy of twinkling stars. Before you head home, make sure to shop for locally-made apricot oil, honey and Himcoop jam and the fabled Chingu blankets that claim to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Local delicacies include chilra – a pancake made of fermented jiggery and flour, sidu – a large, steamed dumpling stuffed with walnut chutney, poppy seeds and roasted sesame, and topped with ghee, and bedhni rotis – thick, unleavened bread stuffed with a roasted sesame and jiggery.
