Mendoza
In the morning City Tour. A picturesque circuit touring the old and new parts of the city center. Mendoza is most notable for its architectural layout, with wide tree-lined avenues and narrow canals running along the sides guiding water around the city. Transit through the streets, learning about the history and culture of the people and the great effort made to transform the arid desert into a thriving oasis. Our tour begins in the area of the foundational museum, a historical site dating back to 1561 when Don Pedro del Castillo founded the city. The space is currently used as a Plaza with Museum, Jesuit ruins, and vestiges of the city after the earthquake of 1861. Continuing our tour, the main square, home to the Cathedral, the Basilica of St. Francis, the former Banco Hipotecario (now Ministry of Culture and Tourism), the Andean Trade and former Bank of Mendoza (now Contemporary space of art), the Plaza Independencia and España, and the Civic district with Government House and an Enoteca. Later we head down the prestigious street Emilio Civit, a residential area that leads to General San Martin Park - the lung-shaped park of the city. We enter by the famous gates, pass the horses of Marly, Rosedal, and pass the lake until we reach the Cerro de la Gloria, where a Monument to San Martín and his army is located. Then go to Challao, where the Shrine, which venerates the Virgin of Lourdes, lies with spectacular views of the Mendocinian mountains. The afternoon is part of a Wineries Tour: This circuit takes you out of the city and into the wine-making districts of Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu. Here you witness techniques used to irrigate the dry land (canals and ditches) and hear about how the aborigines managed to change a vast desert into a productive oasis. This area is home to prestigious wineries that produce internationally-recognized Argentinean wines. We visit two of these wineries, both still using traditional working methods, together with some of the latest technology. Your tour is accompanied by a wine expert, who explains some of the vinification methods and processes, bottling and labeling of wines, and you can enjoy a tasting of the different wines the vineyards have to offer.
