Located at a distance of 12 km from the city centre, the Madurai International Airport was established back in the year 1957. Used by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, the airport currently serves as a connecting point in Tamil Nadu, for all the major cities of India. This airport was one of the first 35 non-metro airports that underwent modernization, after which it was re-inaugurated in the year 2010.
The two terminals housed by the airport span over an area of 17,000 square metres, complete with security counters, 16 check-in counters, 12 immigration counters along with 5 customs counters. The passenger holding capacity of both the domestic terminal, as well as the international terminal is 250 each.
The airport enjoys appreciable connectivity with all the major cities of India, through various leading domestic airlines. Regular international flight services to Colombo and Dubai are also offered by this airport.
