Named after the first deputy Prime Minister of India, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport essentially serves two of the major cities in the state of Gujarat, viz. Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Strategically located in the Hansol Area only 10 km from Ahmedabad, it serves over 7 million passengers annually.
Established as early as 1937, this airport initially only served domestic flights. It was only in the year 2010 that it was converted into an international airport. Given that it is the only international airport in Gujarat, it faced enormous traffic and thus was granted with a new terminal for international flights in the year 2010.
It was due to this technologically advanced, contemporary terminal, that the airport received the award for ‘National Structural Steel Design and Construction’, in the year 2011.
Very recently, the airport was equipped with a 700kWp rooftop solar plant, in a bid to accentuate its energy efficiency.
