Named after one of the leading freedom fighters of India, the Veer Savarkar International Airport of Port Blair is located at a distance of 2 km from the city. This airport acts as the primary point of connection between the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the rest of the nation. Essentially a civil enclave, the airport shares its facilities with INS Utkrosh of the Navy.
The airport is also known to serve private jets and offers a major boost to tourism in the area. It is for this reason that a new building for the airport is slated to be commissioned in the year 2018. Currently, the airport houses a single terminal which is equipped to handle a maximum of 400 passengers at any given point in time.
While the airport enjoys connectivity to all the major cities of India, through prominent flight operators such as GoAir, Jet Airways, Air India, and Spice Jet, there are no direct international flights from this airport. All flights headed to international destinations such as London, Paris, Singapore etc, are routed through major cities like Mumbai and Delhi.
