Also known as Kozhikode Airport or Karipur Airport, the Calicut International Airport was established back in the year 1988. Serving the state of Kerala, this airport is located at a distance of 25 km from the city of Calicut, in Karipur.
It was in the year 2006 that the airport was granted its ‘International Status’. The airport ranks as the twelfth busiest in India with respect to passenger traffic, and the third busiest airport in Kerala, next to the airports of Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram.
The airport currently houses three terminals of which Terminal 1 handles low-cost domestic carriers, while Terminal 3 serves high-end domestic flights as well as all international flights. Terminal 2 currently caters only to special operations, such as Haj Flights. The airport is also home to a dedicated cargo terminal, which won the "e-Asia 2007" award, for the Implementation of e- Commerce / Electronic Data Interchange.
Due to its distinct terrain, the airport runway is susceptible to poor visibility conditions during the day as well as at night. It was for this reason that the Airports Authority of India implemented a unique runway lead-in lighting system, the first of its kind in India. The airport currently houses an Asphalt runway which is 2,860 m in length, which only recently underwent re-carpeting which has given way to its 24-hour operations.
