Also known as the Umroi Airport, the Shillong Airport is located at a distance of 30 km from the city. Essentially a civilian airport, it serves the state of Meghalaya. While the airport initially commenced operations in the 1970s, it underwent a major expansion activity in June 2009 and covered an additional land area of 224 acres. The new terminal was then inaugurated in 2011.
The airport houses a single terminal that caters to all the domestic flights. With a passenger holding capacity of 50 each, for arrivals as well as departures, the terminal is equipped with 6 check-in and 2 security counters. The terminal spans over an area of 5,900 sq metres.
The airport is served by the Air India, for direct flight services to Kolkata, The airport also enjoys indirect connectivity to a large number of North Eastern cities including Patna, Aizawl, Imphal, Bagdogra, Borjhar, Jorhat, Birsa and Silchar along with Port Blair of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
