My best cruise experience in the mystic Egypt

My best cruise experience in the mystic Egypt

Vijaylaxmi Thakur, May 20, 2015
Egypt is full of dreams, mysteries, memories.

‘My heart will go on’ - do you remember this song from the romantic movie ‘Titanic’? The very moment I saw the picturisation of this passionate song, I decided to plan a cruise voyage. The days passed and this deep desire of mine was yet to be satiated. Then one final day, I got a call from my best friend Uma, an ocean lover. I was surprised to know that she had explored various cruise packages and secretly booked a cruise trip for both of us to Egypt.

Luxor

It was a breathtaking moment when we saw our Nile Cruise. She looked stunning and inviting, as though hinting us, that we were about to witness a joyful journey. As we stepped in, the cool sea breeze welcomed us. The glorious wonders of Egypt and the luxury on the cruise were a treat to our senses. Our cruise halted at Luxor, and it was time to experience the Sound and Light Show. Dazzling lights, lovely music and the interesting storytelling brought the ancient Pyramids of Giza to life. The shimmering evening revealed the ancient history of Egypt. After capturing these awe-inspiring moments, we headed back to our cruise, indulged in sumptuous Egyptian delicacies and went off to sleep.

Karnak Temple Complex

The morning was heavenly; we couldn’t help but click pictures of the beautiful sunrise. With a toothsome breakfast, we energised ourselves to explore the secrets of this haven. We headed to the Karnak Temple Complex, where we saw ruins of ancient temples that gave us a glimpse into its glorious past.

Next, we visited the Temple of Edfu, which was built in honour of the falcon god Horus and is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt. The inscriptions on the walls provided information on the ancient myths of this land. While observing these glorious sites, we were transported to the bygone era.

I had read lots of books on Egypt and to experience it first-hand, was a dream come true. Today, we visited the fascinating Temple of Kom Ombo. Being a double temple, it has gained immense popularity. We were told that the southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god (Sobek) and the northern half to the falcon god (Horus). According to a myth, Sobek is associated with the wicked god Seth and the allies of Seth made their escape by changing themselves into crocodiles. In the temple sanctuary we also found some of the mummified crocodiles.

It was evening and the sky was glowing with colours of pink and orange. We reached Aswan at the perfect time to witness its mesmerising beauty. Me and Uma indulged in a leisure walk recalling the sublime moments, we had shared so far on our cruise trip. The sight of the picturesque Nile drove us crazy and inspired us to hum our favourite song.

Philae temple

Each day of our trip got us excited and taught us something new. We headed to explore the captivating Agilika Island. This island houses the Philae temple, which was built in the honour of goddess Isis, the mother of Horus. We were told that Isis is a significant figure of the ancient world. Since she brought her dead husband, Osiris, back to life and gave birth to falcon god Horus, she is worshipped as a healer, protector of kings and giver of life.

In the evening, we took a rejuvenating stroll at the Aswan market, to explore the amazing Nubian handicrafts. It was the last night of our cruise tour, we exchanged our contact numbers with the new friends, we had made on the cruise. On our way back home, along with the souvenirs, we were carrying lots of everlasting memories with us!
