"The future depends on what you do today."
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - a name that is not just well known in our country, but is a name recognized and respected throughout the world. A beacon to all, his policies of Satyagraha and Ahimsa helped win many battles. So on the occasion of his birthday (2nd October), we bring to you the different countries and places other than India, that pay homage to this icon of strength. Start your journey and witness the aura of Gandhism yourself by booking an air ticket to these destinations:
1. Johannesburg
At the young age of 24 when Gandhi arrived in South Africa, he took it upon himself to fight for the rights of the ill-treated and downtrodden, and most importantly-against racism, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a Gandhi statue exists in Johannesburg. South Africa’s second-largest city, food, and culture are just one of the many reasons to visit this place. It’s even home to the Nelson Mandela National Museum, another icon who inspired many.
2. Church street, Pietermaritzburg
Not just one, but two statues of Gandhiji can be found in South Africa. One might recognize this city as the place where Gandhiji was thrown off the train for traveling first class. The city has come a long way since then. With beautiful landscapes and buildings with stunning architecture, this place definitely needs to find a place on your must-visit list!
3. Union Square, New York
New York! The concrete jungle where dreams are fulfilled: a vibrant city of art, music, and culture. Anything and everything can be found here: including the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Union Square Park is a historical place, and in the southwest corner of this park, you can find the bronze statue of Gandhiji. Psst pssst! Do you know which other statue calls the park it's home? The statue of US president George Washington!
4. Tavistock Squre, London
Located in central London is Bloomsbury (not to confuse it with the famous publishing house), and located in Bloomsbury is- the Tavistock Square. A public garden of sorts, it is here that you can find a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Amongst the beautiful trees of the park, you can find Gandhiji's statue, where he sits crosslegged. He shares the Tavistock Square with the bust sculpture of Virginia Woolf.
5. Burgos, Spain
A beautiful city in northern Spain. It houses the beautiful Cathedral of Burgos an architectural marvel, and a UNESCO world heritage site. With many museums and Gothic cathedrals to boast about, it radiates culture and art in all directions. Not all that well known in the tourist circles, what’s lesser known is the bronze bust of Gandhiji that can be found here, at Burgos.
