Reasons for Schengen Visa Rejection

November 20, 2018

Applying for a Schengen Visa? Then, you would surely want to know the reasons why an Embassy/Consulate rejects a Schengen Visa application.

Scroll down and read on, so that you avoid the following errors while applying for your Schengen Visa.

Lack of proper proof of travel itinerary

Your Schengen visa won’t be approved if you do not provide a proper plan for your trip. So, while applying for your visa - make sure to submit the proof of your flight tickets, all the booked accommodations of your Schengen trip, and a proper travel itinerary showing the dates and places you are going to visit.

Insufficient funds to finance your trip

Another reason for Schengen visa rejection is the failure to provide proof of adequate funds for the duration of your trip. So, when applying for a Schengen visa, you must have sufficient funds in your bank accounts. Submission of bank statements (reflecting sufficient bank balance) for the last 6 months and Income tax returns for the last 3 years increases the chances of your visa approval.

Purpose of visit not clear

The Embassy/Consulate can reject your Schengen visa application if you haven’t justified the purpose of your visit. The reason for your travel to the Schengen countries should be supported with the documents you provide. Documents include proof of accommodation, travel itinerary, appointment letter, salary slips and leave approval letter from your employer (if you’re employed). The Embassy/Consulate wants to make sure that you don’t have plans to overstay or look for a job in the Schengen countries while holding a tourist visa.

Lack of proper travel insurance

To have valid travel insurance while traveling to Schengen countries is quite important. Your visa application can be rejected if you do not have appropriate travel insurance coverage. The insurance policy should be valid in the Schengen countries; the travel insurance amount should cover the duration of your stay in the Schengen area as well as your return to the home country.

Invalid travel documents

Your Schengen visa won’t get approved if you provide invalid travel documents. Such travel documents include a damaged passport, passport older than 10 years, a passport which is not valid for at least 3 months after the return from the visit in the Schengen area, the passport that does not have two blank pages, and documents that do not match with the details mentioned on the applicant’s passport.

Having a criminal record

If the applicant was or is currently involved in illegal or criminal activities, the Embassy/Consulate will reject the Schengen visa application. Such an application is considered a threat to the security and public wealth of the Schengen countries and hence will not be allowed to enter the Schengen area.
