Diplomatic passports are issued in India to diplomats working for the Government of India and are travelling abroad for an official purpose. Their passport cover is of the different color as they hold ‘type D’ Passport with maroon cover.

Who can apply?
Diplomatic passports in India are issued to the following:
- All Indian Foreign Services and the Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) officers traveling abroad on official business
- People holding diplomatic status
- Officials deputed by Government of India for official duty abroad
- Family member traveling abroad with their dependent status or official one
- Spouse of an officer with diplomat status
How to Apply?
Satisfying the above-mentioned criteria and you are certified by Indian Government for the diplomatic passport, you are required to follow the steps:
- Register through Passport Seva Online Portal
- Login with the newly created Login Id
- Click on link with “Apply for Diplomatic/ Official Passport”
- Fill all the required details and click submit
- Visit Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) Division along with all required documents and the filled application form.
Required Document
Applying for the diplomatic passport, you are required to submit following documents in the same following order
- Printed copy of online filled application form
- Political/PMO Clearance
- Copy of Official Identity (ID) Card
- Certificate from Head of Office
- Request from Forwarding Officer
- Other Relevant Documents
Important thing to remember
Diplomatic passports are given to officers with high official status and service responsibilities, therefore, it becomes necessary that once the assignment is terminated or over, these diplomatic passports are to be surrendered back to their respective office.
Additional information
Application for the Diplomatic passport is only considered by Consular, Passport, and Visa (CPV) Division at Patiala House, New Delhi. On completion of all legal formalities, it is required to visit CPV for further proceedings.
